I was in theatre yesterday (as in surgical theatre). Wasnt so keen to go though, mainly because Ive had plenty of theatre rostered for me before, have taken out fair amount of teeth, and couldnt trust myself to stand up for about 31/2 hrs. I went anyway and was with Dr R who was unbelievably nice and motherly. I did a crappy job though, just standing from behind their heads, supporting the patients' head on either side while the surgeon worked in the mouth with few chances to peek to see what was going on. That was because, they say, I was the fourth most important person in the theatre after the patient, the surgeon, and the intern which in other words translated as the least important person there.
Anyhoo, the story was that when the anesthetist announced that they were having a birthday party down there in the tea room. Surgeon invited me to join. She was like "are you not eating?" "no". She came back 5mins later to find me reading dental material book (ah kantoi skema), and told me to scrub in. I scrubbed next to her. Then....
"so you're fasting"
"yes I am".
"tell me what is the reason for fasting"
I paused for 5 seconds to think of the best answer to give
"to please God, thats the main reason"
BIG AWKWARD PAUSE
then she went on and asked about what time to start eating and so on and so forth
Was the answer was too ganas or what? But I'm glad I said it. I hope it strucked her in some way, and may Allah give hidayah and show her the true way.
I remember Yusuf Estes story about how the muslim man who reverted him to islam- how he never tried to preach him. He was taking one step at a time. He told him whatever was necessary, told him what true islam was when events arised or when questions asked, but he did not preach. Yusuf Estes believes so much that debates just heat people up, it doesnt bring nur. Ive seen it, and I believe in it too. And now, that pretty much becomes my approach in revealing islam to yet-to-be-muslims out there.
I try my best (oh diriku yg lemah ini) to be a muslim in everything I do. And I know people associate whatever I do with my religion. No more lengthy explanation to please them and trying to suit to their wants when people ask one short question unless demanded otherwise. I'd try to say what the core of the issue is. And hopefully my akhlak would say most of it.
